Is a Penile Implant Right for You?

Is a Penile Implant Right for You?

Your struggle with erectile dysfunction (ED) has been a frustrating one, and so far, frontline treatments, such as medications and lifestyle changes, haven’t moved the needle much.

Of the 30-50 million men who are struggling with ED in the United States, many are dealing with conditions that won’t improve, making their ED more of a permanent problem. And when your ED becomes refractory, which means untreatable through conservative measures, a penile implant is often the best path forward to restoring your all-important sex life.

At Arizona Urology, our team of men’s health experts has found that male prosthetics, or penile implants, are a very good solution for men struggling with stubborn erectile dysfunction. So, if you’re trying to figure out whether a penile implant is right for you, read on.

How penile implants work

There are three different types of penile implants that can help men work around their ED and put them in charge of their ability to perform sexually. These types include:

Rod implants — this is a simple, bendable silicone rod that we implant in your penis that you can manipulate to make your penis more erect.

Two-piece inflatable pump — we insert two cylinders or tubes into your penis, as well as a combination pump and fluid reservoir in your scrotum.

Three-piece inflatable pump — we insert two cylinders into your penis, a pump in your scrotum, and a reservoir for the fluid in your abdomen.

Far and away, the most common type of penile implant is the three-piece inflatable pump, which accounts for 90% of new penile implants

These inflatable systems are designed to provide men control over their erections — with a quick squeeze on the pump in your scrotum, fluid fills the cylinders to give you an erection. Another squeeze after sex returns the fluid to the reservoir system, and your penis goes flaccid.

With the pump in the scrotum, you can activate the system discreetly, which many of our patients appreciate.

Good candidates for penile implants

Whether a penile implant is right for your circumstances is really only a decision that you can make, though we’re happy to guide you. Here, we review a few key reasons men come to us for penile implants, including:

Men also find that penile implants offer a more streamlined solution than injections, vacuum pumps, and pills, which all require some effort and foreplanning. Not to mention, these ED options aren’t exactly designed for spur-of-the-moment sexual activity.

For more organic sexual experiences, men turn to penile implants that don’t require any disruptions or pauses during sex. And this approach for ED is more permanent — you can enjoy your penile implant for years to come.

Penile implants receive satisfaction rates exceeding 80% for three-piece implants and 70% for two-piece versions.
