Could UroLift® Be the BPH Solution You’re Looking For?
Are you a little groggy during the day, thanks to getting up throughout the night to urinate? Or maybe you now have to scout out the nearest bathroom wherever you go, thanks to frequent, urgent urges to pee.
These challenges — and more — are commonplace in the world of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which affects half of men by the age of 60.
As men’s health and urology experts, the team at Arizona Urology is uniquely suited to managing BPH, and we offer a range of effective treatments, including UroLift®. Here's a look at how this innovative system can help put pesky BPH symptoms in the rearview mirror.
BPH basics
Your prostate is a gland that’s located where your bladder and urethra meet, and it’s responsible for producing semen to carry and nourish your sperm. Your prostate undergoes two growth periods — one during puberty and the other is a continuous one that starts around the age of 25 and follows you into old age.
Since the prostate is ever-growing, albeit slowly, it can start to interfere with your urinary tract and urinary function over time. This occurs because your prostate surrounds the top of your urethra and, as it grows, it can squeeze this tube and create problems with urination. Problems that you’d like to see go away, such as:
- Nocturia — needing to urinate at night
- Trouble initiating urination
- Dribbling urine
- Frequent urges to pee
- Weak stream
Some men can experience pain when they urinate, but that’s not all that common.
Resolving BPH with UroLift
There are many different treatment avenues for BPH, and we’re pleased to include UroLift in our arsenal.
One of the challenges of treating BPH is that we don’t want to interfere with your urinary tract, but that can be tricky given the location of your prostate. With UroLift, we’re able to create space between your prostate and urethra to improve flow, without cutting or removing tissue. Here’s how UroLift works:
- We insert a cannula (small tube) through your narrowed urethra to access your prostate
- Once in position, we deliver small clips through the tube
- The clips lift and hold your enlarged prostate away from your urethra, permanently
- We remove the cannula, leaving a more open urethra behind
Even better, we use only local anesthesia, perform the UroLift procedure in our offices, and you’re free to go home afterward.
Once we place the clips, you should experience long-lasting relief from your BPH symptoms, allowing you to get back to a better quality of life.
If you’d like to learn more about Urolift and whether you’re a good candidate, please don’t hesitate to contact us at one of our offices in Phoenix, Goodyear, Gilbert, and Glendale, Arizona, today to schedule a consultation.
